The crude methanol extract of the stem of Glycyrrhiza uralensis F(subscript ISCHER) was found to exhibit significant antiplatelet activity. Bioassay-directed fractionation of the methanol extract has led to the isolation of seven antiplatelet components-licoricidin (1), 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid (2), isoliquiritigenin (3), quercetin (4), kaempferol (5), apigenin (6) and formononetin (7). Among these compounds, the antiplatelet activities of components 4, 5, 6 and 7 have been reported. Our study found that compounds 1, 2 and 3 could inhibit completely the platelet aggregation induced by arachidonic acid and collagen at 50 μg/ml, l00 μg/ml and 500 μg/ml, respectively. The antiplatelet mechanisms of these compounds are probably due to their inhibition on thromboxane A2 formation. |
