The purpose of this study was to indentify factors related to problem behavior in adolescents with Asperger's Syndrome and high-functioning autism. The results have implications for designing interventions to prevent the occurrence of Asperger's Syndrome and high-functioning autism. In this study, prospective longitudinal and crossover study designs were used. Our research sample consisted of 40 people from the psychiatric day and acute wards of a medical center and was based on a purposive sample method. The number of observations for each case was determined on the basis of the number of patient hospital visits; one hospital visit was the minimum, whereas five hospital visits was the maximum. Research data were collected from the psychiatric senior nurse. The Problem Behavior checklist was used to evaluate the results. Data were analyzed by GEE. The results showed that age, BGAS, and the classifi cation of disease level combined with other diagnoses and ever executing behavior modification were significantly correlated with problem behavior. After controlling for other significant variables, ever executing behavior modification remained statistically signifi cant. Problem behavior decreased by 10.5% in those who participated in behavior modifi cation compared with those who did not. Implications for nursing practice and future studies were also suggested. |
