Many studies, especially community related, argued that bonding with a place can be only formed through a long period of interaction with the place. However, many researchers have indicated that people might have strong bonding to places or certain type of places (rather than a specific place) that never being visited. Since people have no visiting experiences with such places, one of the possible reasons is that such bond is transferred or projected from other experiences, and this is the purpose of this study to understand the possibility of such bonding transferability or continuity. For this objective, a photo-based internet survey was conducted. Respondents from two different countries, Taiwan and Macau, were asked to provide their feelings of bonding toward the place depicted in 16 photos taken from three different countries. The survey results showed that two groups have higher bonding toward the places in the pictures taken in their home countries, even though the respondents have no idea where those places are. The results supported the hypothesis that people can transfer their bonding of place based on previous experiences to a new place which is never visited. The results may contribute to landscape design and planning process. |
