Enterovirus 71 (EV71) (genus Enterovirus, family Picornaviridae), one of the major causative agents for hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD), may cause severe neurological diseases. In an outbreak of EV71 infection in Taiwan 1998, there were seventy-eight fatal cases, and another outbreak in 2000, there were twenty-six children dead. We performed the temperature sensitivity and the plaque polymorphism studies of EV71 isolates and found that most of isolates from patients with CNS involvement could grow at high temperature (40℃) and the variation of plaque size of virus isolates was not correlated with the severity of disease by EV71. |
