In the last decade, there have been national-wide reading activities held by the government and private groups, which were aiming at children in kindergartens, primary schools and junior high schools. However, the results from international assessments (e.g. PISA, PIRLS) are far from satisfaction. This phenomenon might be the result of test-oriented teaching, the rapid development of multimedia, the low birth rate, etc. Concerned about the young generation growing up in this environment, there are many scholars advocating critical thinking and the importance of reading, but the implementation of reading promotion activities in college education has become a thorny issue. Although there are many studies focussing on freshman Chinese or general education courses in higher education, the studies in ”informal reading” promotion activities are still few. This paper reviews the characteristics of college students' Chinese reading strategies and the methods of improving Chinese capability in 49 Universities of Science and Technology in Taiwan. It then focuses on the Chinese reading promotion which integrates the idea of ”reading in the morning” into ”service-learning” developed by National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. |
