No-Lift Policy provides for a safer approach to patient/client handling with manual lifting of patients is eliminated or minimized wherever possible. Previous studies have indicated that No-Lift Policy is positively effective in preventing caregivers' injuries, improving quality of care, and executing patients' fall prevention. The principles of No-Lift Policy include: manual transfer, especially vertical forces, should be minimized, adequate assistive devices are required to use, people should be encouraged to assist in their own transfers, and etc. In executing No-Lift Policy, the knowledge of safe patient handling and risk assessment, as well as the skills of using assistive devices are equally important. Among them, the efforts of the managing level are especially critical. Given No-Lift Policy was introduced to Taiwan not long ago, and no formal regulation was formed, the popularity is still relatively low. The possible obstacles of promoting the Policy may include: the low acceptance of managing people, lack of financial resources, and the difficulty in changing organizational culture. We are expecting with the efforts of professionals and practitioners, such knowledge and skills can be spread, and therefore improve the quality of care. |
