Some thirty years on, research on psychological traditionality/modernity among the Chinese people has progressed through three phases: 1969-1984 (Phase 1), 1985-2004 (Phase 2), and 2005 till now (Phase 3). The purpose of this article is two-fold: to review key findings from the above three phases, and to propose future directions of research. We purport two vantage points for future research. One will focus on exploring possible ways of co-existence between traditionality and modernity. The other will mount a paradigm change, from homothetic to idiosyncratic, from quantitative to qualitative, and from trait to person-situation interactional approach. |
