The megatrend toward urbanization and urban development not only appears to be obvious in Taiwan, Asia and around the world, but also signifies an enormous change in the twenty-first century. What impacts would urban development have on urban society and its environment? In what aspects would urban dwellers modify their styles or traits while living there? How would urban schools adjust themselves to meet the emerging challenges of urbanization and urban development in the new century? In recognition of the fact of fast advancing urban society, the study is concerned with the fit between school curricula and urban development. Literature review was conducted to explore the multiple implications of urban development for urban schools, and the relevant curricular perspectives that may help urban schools strengthen their ties with urban communities. In addition, empirical data concerning urbanization and urban conditions both from domestic and abroad were cited to provide authentic cases for discussion. As a result, the study sheds light on the potential utilities and limitations of applying the curricular perspectives for social adaptation and social reconstruction. In prospect, the study urges that urban schools keep pace with the advancement of urban society and make curricula fit for urban development. |
