Almudena Grandes (1960-2021) was undoubtedly one of the most significant novelists in the contemporary literary context. Her unique and multifaceted literary work has earned her numerous accolades. In 2010, she published the novel Inés y la alegría, which received several awards. This novel is also the first of six in an ambitious project called Episodes of an Endless War (Los Episodios de una guerra interminable). In this study, we will analyze the treatment of urban space and its relationship with collective memory in the novel. The first part of this paper addresses the structure of this work. In the second part, we attempt to explore the spatial signs and the way urban spaces of the city connect with the characters. Through the novel, we will explore how the city permeates the subconscious lives of its inhabitants and ceases to be perceived as a neutral and passive environment. In the third part, we will examine the close bond between spaces and collective memory. Our goal is to analyze how the writer develops the story based on urban spaces linked to collective memory. Finally, we will observe the interaction between collective memory, urban space, and its symbolic significance.
