Near the end of 2021, the parties of Germany’s new traffic light coalition - the SPD, Greens, and FDP - took an unprecedented step by being the first government coalition in German history to mention Taiwan in a coalition agreement. Even thereafter, the government expressed itself on Taiwan with a clarity not seen in decades and initiated ministerial-level diplomatic exchanges that stood in stark contrast to the practices of previous federal governments. This revitalization of German-Taiwanese relations was not due to a fundamental reassessment of Taiwan itself. Rather, it must be understood in the context of Germany’s changing approach toward the People’s Republic of China and the geopolitical significance of Taiwan. This study aims to trace the recent developments in German-Taiwanese relations, analyze their underlying factors, and, now that the traffic light coalition is history, provide a snapshot of the current state of affairs.
