This research aims to examine the effects of psychodrama group therapy intervention on chemsex group members in well-being, spontaneity, lack of spontaneity, positive and negative emotions, self-compassion, awareness of chemsex and harm reduction.
The research used the design of pre-test and post-test survey. For the 9 participating chemsex members, the researchers conducted two sessions of psychodrama group therapy, each for two days, for 12 hours, for a total of 24 hours.
Questionnaire data were collected for statistical analysis. There were 6 participants who answered the pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The results found that the psychodrama therapy group can help chemsex members increase their sense of well-being, feel love, live in the moment, and aware the harm of using drug to themselves; and it relieved anxiety, relieved negative emotions and relieved over-identification (rumination of one's own suffering). The psychodrama group intervention significantly reduced the indicators of psychological discomfort: anxiety, negative emotions, and over-identification. Moreover, the intervention significantly improved four indicators of psychological adaptation: happiness, feeling of love, mindfulness (living in the moment), and awareness of harm reduction. In other words, psychodrama group interventions simultaneously reduced participants’ psychological maladjustment and enhance psychological adaptation. Future research could address the adversities of chemsex members.
For example, self-blame, shame, relapse of using drugs, repair of family relationships, and even prevention of chemsex behaviors with a series of qualitative and quantitative researches. Thus, we can learn more about the unique life stories of chemsex members. |
