Danish furniture designer Hans J. Wegner garnered inspiration from Chinese chairs in his creative design process. Nearly a century later, his eminent designs are still praised worldwide. Wegner's international acclaim as the 'Master of the Chair' motivates this study to investigate the possibility of reproducing his iconic Chinese chair series. Grounding on morphological analysis, this study aims to approach the objective by exploring the fundamental principles underlying the style and forms of the chairs through the extraction of their morphological charts. In the deconstruction part of the design form, the components are divided into seven types of components: seat, seat rail, front legs, back legs, back rail, reinforcement, stretcher, etc. It is worth noting that if the back rail extends forward to the front legs, it is the armrest. The main points of the shape of the construction of the material to set up the beginning, and then through the basic shape, connection, support, nesting, cross, weaving, fixed, evaluation and other steps to present its shape characteristics. Extracting the morphological chart, three novel designs of Chinese chairs were developed. Expert judgment confirms the adherence of proposed designs to the characteristics of Wegner's Chinese chair series, thus validating the purpose of reproducing the style. At a scholarly level, this study explores the conceptualization of Wegner's Chinese chair series using morphological analysis theory. From a practical standpoint, the approach of adapting pioneering furniture designs demonstrated in this study contributes to inspiring furniture designers with innovative methods to design Chinese chairs. |
