This paper focuses on Syuhei Uchida’s life and his thought. Syuhei Uchida (1857-1944) was one of the represent scholars of modern Japanese Kimon School. Actually he was not only a famous scholar of Kimon School but also a bridge between Japan and Germany literature and aesthetic. He translated Germany literature into Chinese to introduce these to Japan and was affirmed by literary circles in Meiji Period. Therefore, Syuhei Uchida had influence on literary and academic circles in Meiji Period. But today, regrettably he was almost forgotten by academic circles. We can complete the blank of the history of modern Japanese Sinology, especially the history of modern Japanese Syushigaku through the research on Syuhei Uchida. |
