Objective: With the increasing emphasis on leisure and health, leisure activity participation is gradually being promoted on anational scale and is becoming aprominent pastime. This study proposes atheoretical model for predicting and explaining factors influencing hospital employees’behavioral intention toward leisure activity participation. Accordingly, the study drew from the theory of planned behavior and incorporated theories of participation motivation and habit formation. Furthermore, the study viewed participation motivation as amultidimensional construct of ahigher-order structure. Methods: This study included employees of ateaching hospital in Yunlin County, Taiwan, as research participants. Aquestionnaire survey was used to collect data. Empirical data from 178 participants were analyzed using Smart PLS 3.0 to validate the research models and hypotheses. Results: The analysis results revealed the following: (1) internal motivation is amajor antecedent of participation motivation; (2) participation motivation has asignificant positive effect on subjective norms, attitudes, and perceived behavioral control; (3) attitude, perceived behavioral control, and habits are crucial antecedents of behavioral intention. Conclusions: The study findings may serve as areference for the development of health promotion strategies for fostering leisure activity participation among hospital employees. |
