Amid the global COVID-19 crisis, Taiwan faced its largest COVID-19 outbreak in the summer of 2021. For advanced emergency response hospitals responsible for treating COVID-19 patients, protecting health-care professionals who continue to provide surgical care to infected patients requiring surgery remains aconcern. This article describes the air-conditioning design requirements of astandard positive-pressure operating theater equipped with negative-pressure anterooms for COVID-19 patients requiring surgery; the article focuses on how to establish asafe environment to optimize clinical care and how to minimize the exposure of patients and healthcare professionals. The environmental features of such operating theaters must comply with Taiwan Centers for Disease Control guidelines. Parameters such as weekly temperature, humidity, air pressure, particulate matter concentration, wind speed, gas recirculation, and air filtration were collected and tested in this study. Our experience in establishing this positive-pressure operating theater can serves as areference for other hospitals aiming for proactive preparedness. |
