Marivaux never stops exploring and examining the truth of the human heart. To grasp this truth, through his works, he presents many different kinds of lies that prevent self-knowledge. This article proposes to study a special form of lying in Marivaux's plays: bad faith. The peculiarity of bad faith lies in its ambiguity – a mixture of sincerity and lies – which makes it difficult to define and grasp. This is the main reason why this paper refers often to Jean-Paul Sartre's theoretical analysis of bad faith. In fact, Sartre was the first philosopher to conduct an in-depth analysis of the characteristics, mechanisms and contradictions of bad faith. The main objective of this thesis is to study the presentation of bad faith in several of Marivaux's plays. To illustrate the numerous representations of bad faith in this theater, we focus on the aspect of love relationships. Moreover, by studying the discourse of bad faith, this article also provides an alternative perspective on the comprehension of marivaudage. Finally, if the main purpose of this research is to understand why and how Marivaux's characters can deceive themselves, we also want to show that for Marivaux, even until the end of the play, the problems caused by bad faith have never been truly solved |
