Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel disease that is highly infectious and globally widespread. To date, it has caused approximately 2 million deaths. It is thus critical to develop COVID-19 preventing strategies to prevent infections at healthcare institutions. This case study is based on an acutely psychotic patient at a medical center in northern Taiwan with suspected COVID-19 infection. A COVID-19 preventing team was activated at the acute psychiatric ward, which developed standard operating procedures for admitting patients into psychiatric ward, as well as COVID-19 prevention procedures in the ward. These procedures included protection guidance for healthcare professionals, method of care in the single-bedded isolation room, and individualized post-isolation approaches for the patient, among others. The care period of this patient was between January 23, 2021 and February 8, 2021. COVID-19 prevention procedures in the acute psychiatric ward were reviewed using dynamic time warping. This experience can serve as a useful reference and guideline for mental health professionals when treating or caring for patients with suspected COVID-19 disease. |
