The Wall (Getsuyōshobō, 1951), an early collection of KōbōAbe (1924–1993), is known for its avant-garde writing style. To date, however, discussions on this work have been focusing on the author’s implementation of avant-garde. The discussion topics and contents have mostly focused on the description that are more unique or dramatic; structural analysis on the creative experimental spirit of parody and alienation have been overlooked. This thesis addressed this gap in literature and focused its discussion on Part Two of The Wall, which is titled The Badger of the Tower of Babel. This study adopted the perspective of metafiction literature for analysis and reached the following conclusions: This work utilized the narrative strategies of calling to the reader and reversing the virtual and reality, and it conducted a writing experiment that integrated critique and creation simultaneously into itself. As a result, self-reference, explanation, and dialogue about fiction were created." |
