Asian Perspectives of the Republic of China in the 1950s-1970s: Focusing on China Student Weekly

本文主要透過1950-1970年代接受美國政府資助並在殖民地香港出版的青年刊物《中國學生周報》，挑選當時期報刊內對於亞洲各項大事件的報導和評論，期望探討及理解當時香港華人青年和報刊如何理解亞洲區域的發展和所發生的重要事件。本文主要疏理並分析了《中國學生周報》上有關於東南亞華僑教育、越南戰爭的評述及封保釣運動的報導或評論，藉此作為切入點，分析該報如何論述當時亞洲各國的發展。本文發現《中國學生周報》並非配合其資助者美國政府的利益立場，作評論或論述這些事件，卻是以中華民國的利益本位，觀看和論述以上三件發生於亞洲區域的重要事件。透過分析《中國學生周報》對於東南亞華僑教育、越南戰爭的評述及對保釣運動的論述意識，可以理解和呈現出當時中華民國政府對於以上三件發生於亞洲區域的重要事件的看法和立場。因此，《中國學生周報》可謂形成了一種「奇特的亞洲視野」。

This article mainly draws on the reports and comments on Asian countries published in China Student Weekly from the 1950s to 1970s, focusing on how the Chinese society understood important events in Asia. My paper specifically relies on China Student Weekly articles which reported on the overseas Chinese education in Southeast Asia, the Vietnam War, and the Baodiao Movement, in an attempt to analyze how this newspaper discussed Asian issues at that time. It is evident that China Student Weekly reported the above three events with an emphasis on the interests of Taiwan (Republic of China), forming a peculiar ''Asian vision.'' In particular, China Student Weekly did not support the national interests of the sponsoring country, that is, the United States, but rather affirmed the political rights of the Republic of China.
