”Tales of Moon and Rain” and 'the Chrysanthemum Vow,' written by Ueda Akinari, are based on ”Tales Old and New,” a standard Chinese novel in the Ming Dynasty, and describes the friendship and faith between two samurai, Hasebe Samon and Akana Soemon. This book is given high appraisal, but there are some debates on this book. One of the debates is the descriptions in the ending that Some on is confined by Amago Tsunehisa' order and Akana Tanji is killed by Hasebe Samon. However, these descriptions are not easily understood and accepted by readers. Therefore, they cause many controversies. These controversies also influence the appraisal of this book. This article, therefore, stands on the premise of the above debate and studies the meaning of kill Tanji through the description of the faith between Samon and Soemon, the development of Bushido spirit in the middle early modern times, and the fighting against the enemy in the samurai stories written by Saikaku. |
