This article examines the functionaries and their duties in Buddhist sutra translation forums in the Tang and Song dynasties, in an attempt to rectify some of the discrepancies in contemporary literature concerning this aspect of Chinese translation history. It finds that these functionaries' duties with regard to sutra translation forums during the Tang Dynasty differ substantially from those described in the Chinese translation literature, and that the sutra translation forums in the Song Dynasty, though largely modeled on those of the Tang Dynasty, were superior to the latter in terms of their appropriateness. |
