It is important that principals employ behaviors that build teacher morale, especially on the elementary level. This qualitative study was conducted at an elementary school in central Taiwan. The purpose of this study is, from the perspectives of teachers, to investigate the elementary school principals' leadership skills, strategies, and their influence on teacher morale. The questions that guided this study were: (1)What were the leadership behaviors demonstrated by the principal in an elementary school? (2)What were the leadership behaviors associated with teacher morale? (3)What were teachers' perceptions of their principals' leadership behaviors? The purpose of this study is to explore teachers' perception of the principals' leadership style and the effects on teachers' morale. This study reports the results from in-depth interviews of 4 teachers. The findings indicate that, from teachers' perceptions, their work morale is influenced by four areas of principals' leadership: goal setting, foundation of the authority, caring and directing, and communication skills. I offer some suggestions on leadership strategies that principals can apply. |
