This study develops an analytical model on the market areas of high speed rail (HSR) and air transport (AT) serving a medium to long range intercity corridor. Supply and demand attributes such as HSR and AT operating characteristics, terminal locations, expressway locations and speed, trip length, departure time, and origin and destination (O&D) locations are considered. Passengers' optimal choices are assumed by minimizing their generalized travel time. The resu1ting HSR and A T market boundaries are analyzed subject to various conditions. The resu1ts show that expressway locations and speed, passengers' trip length and time values, HSR and A T schedules, speeds, and prices, and terminals and trip O&D locations, all may change the market areas of HSR and AT serving a metropolitan area. |
