This study describes and discusses the development of broadcast education in Taiwan. From the analysis of available data, three developmental stages are identified. The first stage was the origin of broadcast education at the technical-oriented vocational education level. It emphasized on the skills and technical trainning of production. At the second stage, broadcast education started to develop in the journalism or the mass communications departments at the higher education system. It had not yet been recognized as an independent academic area. Broadcast education was either a sub-division or a sub-program that attached to these well-established academic programs or departments. Broadcast journalism and Radio/TV programming were the sole concentration. At last, the stage of maturity came. Broadcast education became an independent area at the higher education level with the establishment of Radio/TV Department of National Chengchi University in 1988. The curriculum covers media management and media ecology besides the traditional broadcast journalism and pregram production. Few existing graduate programs in communications also have devoted their studies into the telecommunication related fields. Theoretic and policy studies have become popular and helpful to this area. However, issues as to elevate the quality of faculty, to promote more studies in local setting or industry, to provide effective learning environment for learners, and to establish graduate programs with diversified concentrations are critical features to the future development of Taiwan's broadcast education. |
