This research paper combining both quantitative and qualitative methods-- experimental design, questionnatre survey, prop narrative strategies and focus groups-- to explore the effects of background music on TV audiences. Results included the following: 1. No matter in the control or experimental groups, the existence of background music would not affect the degree of respondents' recall on TV news. 2. In the control group, the more the respondents ritualizedly used TV, the more they recalled TV news. 3. For those who instrumentally used TV, the existence of background music would not affect respondents' way of reading TV news. 4. In the experimental group, the more the respondents ritualizedly used TV, the less they read TV news by either negotiated or dominant way. |
