General education in higher education originates from 19 century.At that time, quite a few scholars think that students in university receive professional knowledge instead of wide knowledge. Therefore, general education is designed to cultivate students to develop independent analytical thinking and communication skills. Finally it becomes a compulsory course from 21st century. This article used document analysis method to investigate the general education in higher education in Japan, and the college of arts and sciences in the University of Tokyo. Based on these findings, three recommendations are provided as following: First, the Ministry of Education in Taiwan should establish the teaching goals of the general education, and provides universities with relevant supports and rewards to develop general education. Second, build a quality school to provide students with a comfortable study place. Third, cultivate students to become multidiscipline experts with core competence. |
