Sung Yu-chi has honorable records in taekwondo competitions: 3 gold medals at National High School Athletic Game, 5 gold medals at National Intercollegiate Game, 6 gold medals at the National Games, one gold medal at World Junior Taekwondo Championships, and bronze medal at 2008 Olympic Games. His 21-year effort to attain the goal and brilliant achievement has great influence on others and is eminently worthy of study. This study is conducted by unstructured and semi-structured interviews. Participants include Sung Yu-chi, his relatives, and coaches and athletes in Chinese Taipei National Taekwondo Team, 27 interviewees in total. Supplemented by historical reference, this study aims at providing important information for cultivating talents in sports. Sung Yu-chi shows great talent and has been interested in sports since childhood, and later chose taekwondo as his specialty under the direction of his father. Coach Sung views adaptive development as a priority, so has been educating Sung Yu-chi progressively ever since. With professional ability, tender guidance, and decent influence, coach Sung has been playing the key role in Sung Yu-chi’s training process, and all the hard work brings success in his athletic career as well. Sung Yu-chi has been through a lot of difficulties but never back down. In the end, he soared to the new height at Olympic Games. Innovation and persistence are definitely the principal factors to succeed, Sung Yu-chi believes. Sung’s successful experience and the motivating father-and-son cooperation pattern are truly an exemplar for all athletes in sports. |
