Twelve English villages were built in the twelve districts in Taipei City, one in each district. This study thus aimed to explore the implementation of all the twelve English villages and provide suggestions for further improvement. First, the implementation of English villages in different parts of Taiwan and difficulties of implementation are described. The paper then describes the implementation of the English villages in Taipei City, followed by the results from the written feedback on a questionnaire provided by the administrators and local teachers of the English villages. The paper discusses the results as follows: First, the construction of the English villages is based upon the educational policy to create practical learning contexts for children’s English learning and to shorten the gap between the rich and the poor. Second, the English villages emphasize the potential benefits that foreign teachers can offer to co-teach with local teachers. Third, the establishment of the English villages stimulates the students’ English learning motivation through simulated environments; however, different English villages should avoid being built based on the same themes. Fourth, the administrators and local teachers of the English villages voiced their opinions about and recommendations for administration and curriculum development. Based on the findings from the study, constructive suggestions were provided. |
