Increasing economic activities between Taiwan and Japan since the 1980s has lead to the establishment of a number of Japanese language courses in universities in Taiwan. However, the courses have not satisfactorily fulfilled the demand for workers who can understand Japanese corporate culture and communicate with their Japanese colleagues comfortably. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how Japanese language courses at higher education level can contribute to improve Taiwanese-Japanese communication in Japanese firms. For this purpose, the paper first clarifies what communication skills are required for Taiwanese workers through a literature- based study and an interview-based study. Then, a model of a Japanese language course is suggested and tested empirically. Finally, the paper discusses the expected merits of the introduction of such a course into Taiwanese higher education institutions. |
