Youth Division of the Union was published right before Kenji Miyazawa perished, and it is a poem that is often referred to when looking at Miyazawa's relationship with agriculture, or to be more specific, agricultural unions. However, studies discussing the poem so far tend to overlook the time when particular incidents occurred and the time when drafts of the poem were produced. If researchers intend to use Youth Division of the Union as a reference when studying Miyazawa's attitude to unions, they ought to explain when different drafts during different phases were written. This paper aims to add new insight into the observation of the development of Youth Division of the Union by including Miyazawa's background, and changes of situations surrounding agricultural communities at that time, upon the recognition to the shortcoming mentioned above. |
