This paper researched how Japanese native perceive a geminate stop. Four factors, ‘closure duration’, ‘the duration of preceding vowel’, ‘the following consonant’, and ‘pitch type’, were ob served in this paper. To investigate the characteristics of auditory perception, 120 stimuli which have a contrast in above four factors are presented to 36 Japanese natives. They were asked to judge whether these stimuli included a geminate stop. The results of this present study showed a significant effect in three factors, ‘closure duration’, ‘the duration of preceding vowel’ and ‘pitch type’. Furthermore, it was also found that Japanese natives perceive closure duration categorically. |
