After Eiichiro was born, Chie armed herself with the latest child raising theory to come out on top in the entrance examination wars and approached child rearing with an absolute authority. Before long, she stopped wearing makeup and only drank only warm water so that she could afford the tuition, completely denying her existence as a woman. However, her plan to wait some time before having a second child in order to succeed in providing elite education collapsed when her husband, Akio, released a sudden lust for Chie as his wife and an even greater desire for the female body, resulting in the birth of their second son, Kenji, a year later. Throughout the story, what are the various functions of Chie's identity as a female and as a mother and how do these identities fail? This report considers these questions in an attempt to contribute to interpretation of the novel. |
