Nihon Shoki was written in Chinese characters, composed of Chinese grammar and modified mostly with Chinese literary style and quotation. The importance of Nihon Shoki influenced and shaped by Ancient China books is clear to find. How did Nihon Shoki use these Chinese texts and allusions? What did they mean in Nihon Shoki? This paper, part of studying how Nihon Shoki is influenced by Ancient China books, focuses on the image of Emperor Zidou who was closest to the time Nihon Shoki was accomplished, centers the relationship with Ancient China books, and explores the character image of Emperor Zidou. This paper has two conclusions as followed: (1) Nihon Shoki depicts The Queen (Unonosararaouzyo) as a virtue with“motherly model”,“can help the emperor”and“modest and compliment”. Her image contains the ideal queen image in Chinese classics.(2) The image of Emperor Zidou portrayed in Nihon Shoki is very similar to the image of the first female emperor Wu Zetian in Chinese history. It can be said that Wu Zetian is her model. Emperor Zidou is a female emperor with the image of developing a great era, having authoritarian power, closing to the“Holy God”and a sun goddess in the high heaven shining the earth. |
