As an exile writer, Michiyo Mori traveled to Singapore, Malaysia, etc. She also visited Vietnam as a cultural ambassador. Her literary productions are heavy with exoticism by reason of the fact that she is a female writer who traveled across the Occident, the Orient and Southeast Asia which seldom existed in Japan's modern history. However, Michiyo Mori's writings of Southeast Asia haven't been closely concerned by academics, even recent researches on the literature of Southeast Asia in Japanese Colonial Era show a trend towards being diverse and pluralistic. Centered on“Kunichigai”and“Kikyorai”, her books published in 1942, this paper explores the respective image of females as a career woman, a wife, and a senior sister by analyzing the description of their behavior and power relationship between men and women in these two works. Further, Patriarchy and verbal violence in late modern Japan in a cross-cultural perspective are explicitly revealed. On the other hand, split and confusion of feminine consciousness for self-direction in the historical background is clarified. |
