'Chinese Society and Culture'' is a subject to assess examinees' cultural competence in the ''Certification for Proficiency in Teaching Chinese as a Second/Foreign Language''. This research examined the test questions of the subject from 2009 to 2018. It was aimed to understand to what degree the questions successfully assess examinees' cultural knowledge, and to know in which manner the questions reflect the application of logical thinking ability. The results showed that the 4 different types of cultural knowledge questions on the test were very unevenly distributed. The maldistribution could not completely reflect the concept, which the government hold to the cultural ability of Chinese language teachers. In addition, the ability of clarifying concepts of logical thinking was mostly used in the questions. Finally, several proposals were made for improving the design of the questions. |
