The new generation of drawing learners born in the 1990s, especially students who study in the universities of art and design related departments, are the people who will work for our cultural and creative industry. These students have more or less enjoyed reading comic in their past time, therefore the often seen styles of comic have imprinted on their memory during their growing up phase. The aims of this study hope to understand the new generation of drawing learners, how they have influenced by comic and how are the relations between drawing styles of learners and their preferences of comic styles? Therefore, this study applied the ''Test of Drawing Learner's Sketch'' and the ''Questionnaire of Influence of Comics on Drawing Learners and Their Style Preferences'' to exanimate whether the students under the test and the questionnaire who have been influenced by the comics. Followed by the experts to select the students with higher degree of influence on the comics, conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews to the students. The study found that most of the drawing learners will explore their favorite styles through media such as cartoons, games and comics, as well as social networking sites, comic-related platforms on the Internet, and interaction between peers also have a deep influence on comics learning. The learners who believe that they are influenced by comic style think that they will imitate the styles of different cartoonists' works, such as line strokes, facial features, body proportions, costumes, movements and perspectives. On the other hand, the learners who believe that they are not influenced by comics think that they are not imitating but referencing. Instead of completely following the cartoonist's works, they will combine the styles of the cartoonists with their own styles in a ''compromise'' manner. |
