Effective nurse-patient communication is associated with patient safety and quality of care. However, previous studies have shown that nurses’ communication skills do not usually satisfy patients. This article focus on fostering student nurses’ competence in patient communications using textual analyses, interviews, and literature reviews to explore communications course designs and students?learning outcomes while exploring the complexities of nurse-patient communications and the challenges faced by student nurses in nursing practice. Finally, we make some suggestions to enhance the communication competence of student nurses, including improvements to course designs, communication competence evaluations, promotion of advanced communication competence, and potential course applications. We hope that this study will encourage nursing administrators, educators, and researchers to pay more attention to this important issue. |
