1. Over a 3-year period the experiment was conducted at Taipei District Agricultultural Improvement Station. It was proven that without mother stalk harvesting the total yield was the lowest among the treats, but the first two months of its yield was greater than others. It was quite related to the temperature of winter season. In case that December is warm and constantly cold enough from January to February, it increased the yield in spring due to a good vegetative growth after fall harvesting and a favorable dormant period before harvest in spring. 2 Further study made with the method without mother stalk harvesting, there was evident in the case of two seasons of harvesting in spring and fall which caused reducing the yield of the next year greatly, and one of spring season harvesting did not much affect the spring yield of the next year. But the total of its yield and quality were still less than the mother stalk method of harvesting. 3 The yield comparison of mother stalk method with the combined method harvesting was not greatly different. In order to avoid the weakness of the plants it is essential in combined method harvesting to reserve the stalks before the spear does not decrease to an unmarketable size for a continuous harvest up to October of the year. 4. According to analysis, the effect number of mother stalks has no significance between 2-stalk and 3-stalk which was reserved during the time of harvesting. But there was a slight tendency in case of a warmer winter of the year that 3-stalk reservation produce more yield. From the results of this experiment, it is advisable to reserve more stalks with definite numbers in sonthern Taiwan because of their warmer winter. 5. For labor saving the combined method harvesting may be practical, and the period without mother stalk does not go beyond eight weeks according to the data. The author estimates, the time without mother stalk is short in the middle and the southern part of Taiwan due to insufficient dormancy of plants in winter. It is also really hard to practice in Pin-tong area where the vegetative growth of plants is ceaseless all the year round. |
