1.Noticing the problem of poor yield of asparagus in a Tropical area such as Tai wan, the auther has developed the so -called 'Mother stalk method' for the growing of asparagus. The method has been used during the aspar;1gus harvesting period at Taipei District Agricultural Improvement Station since 1955 and has become a method for extension to the asparagus farmers in Taiwan since 1961. 2.In order to clarify the effect of the mother stalk method, this experiment was conducted from February to October of 1965 at Taipei District Agricultural Improvement Station. 3.The results of the experiment have shown that both the quality and quantity of asparugus spears in the mother stalk method block have increased. 4.The investigation showed that soil temperature in the mother stalk method block was lower than that of the check block, especially on fine days. The difference of soil temperature ranged from 3.0'C to 3.3°C. The lowering of soil temperature in the mother stalk method block by preventing direct exposure to the sun is considered vital to the elongation and the quality of spears during the harvesting period 5.It is concluded that the mother stalk method is of great importance to asparagus growing in Taiwan. |
