The host range of Hishimonus concavus Knight was studied in the greenhouse and insectory by determining the suitability of various plants species to this vector of Loofah Witches'-broom for food, oviposition, and development. Fourteen test species of Cucurbitaceae were found to be suitable for oviposition, thirteen for development of nymphes, and thirty three for foods. Adult survival well on Cucurbitaceae, poorly on Convolvulaceae, Portulacaceae; and Amaranthaceae, but differed between the sezes on the same plant species. Females in general survival longer than males. Percent adult survival (females only) after 15 days was 80-100% on 13 species of Cucurbitaceae, 60-79% on 2 species. In the Cucurbitaceae, only Momordica charantia L. was found no eggs to he laid, Cucurbita moschata Duchesne was alto to be unsuitable for development of nymphs. Luffa cylindrica Roem, Lagenaria siceraria Standl, Citrullus vulgaris Schrad and Solena heterophylla (Lour.) Cogn. were more suitable for food, oviposition, and development of Hishimonus concavus Knight. |
