The changes in the activities of antioxidative enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation were investigated for two leafy vegetable used sweet potato cultivars under waterlogging conditions. Destruction of chlorophyll was observed in'Taoyuan-2', but the level ofleaf chlorophyll remained high during the course of study in'Yongtsai'leaves The level ofmalondialdehyde was found to be higher for'Taoyuan-2'after waterlogging treatment. However, lower level of malondialdehyde was produced in waterlogged 'Yongtsai'leaves. Active responses in antioxidative enzyme activities were found for waterlogged'Yongtsai' leaves. However, all these four antioxidative enzyme activities do not seem to be functional in detoxifying active oxygen species in'Taoyuan-2'. The results of the present experiment suggest that susceptibility of leafy vegetable sweet potato to waterlogging may depend upon the cooperative expression of antioxidative enzymes and their protection from oxidative damage . |
