The compilation of The Rectified Interpretation of the Five Classics in the Tang Dynasty was revised on the basis of these explanatory notes of the Six Dynasties, thus many new and old notes remained in The Rectified Interpretation of the Five Classics. Liu Wenqi and Liu Yusong of the Qing Dynasty started to specially differentiate the new and old explanatory notes of this rectified interpretation. This article chooses Investigation of Old Explanatory Notes in Shangshu, that was written by Liu Yusong, to generalize its method of textual criticism, which includes four main areas. In this study, I argue that Liu regarded “Note and Commentary not Annotation" as the revising principle of Kong Yingda is not realistic, and points out that Liu Yusong ignores the fact that The Rectified Interpretation of the Five Classics had been revised twice in the Tang Dynasty thus influencing the completeness of the textual criticism. |
