This essay begins with a comprehensive literature review of Yu Kwang-chung's works and their related debates and controversies, and tries to reconsider Yu's poetry based on the above scholarship. Yu's poetry is neither entirely traditional nor modern, but yet is oriental and occidental at the same time, and thus is difficult to categorize into existing theoretical frameworks. Based on the above, this paper attempts to utilize French philosopher and sinologist François Jullien's insights, the concept of "L'écart et l'entre" (distance and interspace), to re-examine Yu's poetic creation. By analyzing the following features of Yu's poetry, including syntactic elements of Chinese and English languages, American folk songs and Song lyrics, the juxtaposition of faraway wars and lovers' bodies, the pursuit of love and debates on poetics, the encounter between "China" and "self", this paper explores the ways in which Yu's poetic dynamism generates what Jullien calls the fertility in his theorization of "L'écart" (distance), and how the poet creates his own "lyrical structure" that differs from other modern poets. Through the analysis of the lyrical structure formulated by the intersected dynamism in Yu's poetry, this essay aims to renew our understanding of "lyrical tradition". |
