"Chen Xi Yi Rejects Four Appointments from the Imperial Court", "Mr. Li Saves a Snake and Wins Chen Xin", and "Zhan Hao Meets Ying Ying at Su Xiang Pavilion" are chapters from the vernacular compilations Stories to Enlighten the World and Stories to Caution the World. These vernacular short stories are based on classical legends of the Song Dynasty. This paper analyzes these three short stories to elucidate the methods employed in adapting classical Song Dynasty legends into vernacular popular fiction. The findings confirm a logical pattern in the adaptation of San Yan; specifically, preliminarily tracing the story ideologies. For example, "Mr. Li Saves a Snake and Wins Chen Xin" was an adaptation of "Zhu She Ji" (The Red Snake), in which the rescue of and requiting by the snake spirit is the moral of "one good turn deserves another"; "Zhan Hao Meets Ying Ying at Su Xiang Pavilion” was based on the topic of “gifted scholars and beautiful ladies"; and "Chen Xi Yi Rejects Four Appointments from the Imperial Court" highlights "leisure" as the primary argument of the story. Moreover, the present study conducted various overall and detailed adjustments to highlight the story ideologies. |
