Unlike The Tales of Ise, the masterpiece of Utamonogatari (poem-tales), The Tale of the Heike is classified in the genre of Gunki Monogatari (A war chronicle) in Japanese literature history. However, as pointed out in “The Dictionary of Utagatari(narrated poems) and Utamonogatari,” in terms of the relationship between The Tale of the Heike and Utamonogatari, emphasis has always been put on the quotations of Waka (tanka poetry) from The Tales of Ise and stories surrounding Narihira. Since this dictionary is one of the very few previous studies on the relationship between The Tale of the Heike and Utamonogatari, we consider that the studies on the area of Utamonogatari in The Tale of the Heike are still too few. Therefore, this present paper aims at investigating its unique mode of quasi-utamonogatari of The Tale of the Heike, which differs from typical Utamonogatari of The Tales of Ise, an authority on Utamonogatari. Specific examples cited in this research are based on The Narrative of Masa Yori. |
