This paper intends to analyze the semantic structure that supports polysemic characteristics shown by a Japanese verb “hashiru (to run)”. By applying cognitive linguistic theories, this paper clarifies how the semantic components called the prototypical category forms the main meaning of “hashiru”. The paper examines t o what extent semantic relationships based on the outward growth of a lexical network by extension from prototypes are directly involved with production of new polysemic meanings. Based on the facts found by t h e analysis, as a conclusion, the paper categorizes 20 polysemic meanings that the verb “hashiru” expresses, and clarifies how semantic relationships among these 20 polysemic meanings are extended from prototype s . |
