This dissertation tries to discuss Muo-no-rigyo, the fourth of the nine short novels in Ugetsu-monogatari, by adopting the contrast and comparison of the origins. This story, same as the other eight ones, is a typical adaptation written by the master of strange literatures in Edo era—Ueda Akinari, depending on both Chinese and Japanese classics. The fantastic plot, romantic atmosphere, beautiful words, description of humanity, and so on, all make this story popular and well-known. What is the basis of Muo-no-rigyo? Is it XueLuShiYuFuZhengXian or YuFuJi? Each thesis has its reasons to claim. This paper, at first, discusses the claims; then, compare them words by words. After confirm the main basis, continue to compare and contrast between the adaptations and the origins; by this progression, certainly we can know more about Ueda Akinari's writing techniques and his intention of writing this story. |
