This thesis attempts to discover the passages under influence of both I-Ching (The Book of Changes) and Chun-Chiu (The Spring and Autumn Annuals) in the novels of Kyokutei Bakin, a novelist in late Edo period, and in advance examines the connections between the two. Being well versed in Chinese literature history and Philosophy, Bakin sees the mora lideas derived from Chun-Chiu as the supreme guide in writing. The idea of changes is also reflected in his works as well as in his daily lives. The author dedicated a11 his life on writing historical novels, denouncing the rebels and traitors according to Chun Chiu's style, and at the same time following the official histories of ancient China to Interpret the characters' fate with the theory of I-Gua (hexagrams in I-Ching) and Wu-Hsing (the five elements of which the world is composed). Such features no doubt indicate his insistence and pride about writing the history. |
