At present, the Department of Japanese at Tamkang University views the Graduation Project by the seniors as the capstone course which integrates what students learn in their four-year study. Graduation Project includes several options, one of which is senior play. The play is in Japanese, and this requires students to fully understand the scripts to render the characters’ emotions and thoughts naturally in formal performance. However, it is often that few students in this department have experience in language other than studying Japanese textbooks. Some students do not even understand the script until they read through the Chinese subtitles of the play for audiences who do not speak Japanese. Through the study, comprehension and interpretation of scripts, students can definitely see considerable progress in multiple aspects of their Japanese skills. This is one of the reasons that senior play can become a part of the capstone course in this department. This research will identify the issues in senior play which the Department of Japanese at this University currently encounters and attempt to propose feasible solutions, in hopes of enabling the students to enjoy the world of Japanese stage play. |
