With the idea of imaging as the principle of teaching, this course aimed to engage students to learn American literature and culture through literary works, tangible images (such as maps and artworks), and classroom activities. The curriculum included five units: New Worlds vs. Old Worlds, the literature of American romanticism, realism, modernism, and multiculturalism. Class activities consisted of text recitation, poetry writing, and a story-telling contest. Major evaluations included class notes and group reports. Four suggestions were given for future improvement: 1. The literature-reading teaching objectives could be revised to include a cultural studies approach. 2. To provide a more coherent narrative of American literature, the choice of literary works should be more focused. 3. A close reading of selected passages of literary works should be required for students to foster their sense of English in cultural contexts better. 4. Time should be given for class discussion and class-note sharing with the support of teaching assistants to help cultivate students' critical thinking. |
